A four year old pluriparous Large White Yorkshire sow was presented to the Veterinary Clinical Complex, DUVASU,
Mathura in its full-term gestation period with the history of farrowing without progress in parturition for 48 hours.
Based on clinical and per-vaginal examinations, the case was diagnosed as dystocia due to secondary uterine inertia.
Induction therapy was administered with the combination of dextrose, oxytocin and calcium after removing the
obstructed fetus by manual traction. Upon treatment five dead emphysematous piglets with three stillbirths (remove
piglets) were removed per-vaginally. The sow had an uneventful recovery after treatment with antibiotic and
supportive therapy for four days.
