Abstract

The Veterinary practice in India is rural based. The bulk of practice is directed to cattle and buffaloes and other farm animals, pets, zoo animals and birds are also part of the practice to a lesser degree and in limited areas. The livestock farming as an independent enterprise to agriculture has not yet developed in general. Baring some exceptions, even in milk pockets, cows and buffaloes are not kept as the sole source of family earning. The Veterinary practice has, therefore, remained closely linked to developmental challenges in the agricultural farming system. Mechanization of draught and transportation in recent years has reduced the number of draught animals, almost completely in some highly progressive agricultural areas.
